Step into Cleanliness: A Home Shoe / Slipper System

If you related to the “Bus Pants” episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon wears dedicated clothes strictly for bus rides, then promptly changes — this blog is for you.

A bit of a germaphobe, myself — I try not to drag dirt, grime and germs through the house. As such, I have devised a system with strategically placed shoes around the house. The shoes stay in their designated areas as to not cross contaminate. My bedroom slippers are the “in-betweeners” that get me from one space to another.

LOCATION BREAKDOWN

  • By the garage. To wear when taking out trash, doing yard work, etc. One pair is waterproof so I can navigate puddles, snow, etc.

  • By the front door. To wear when getting the mail or packages — or if I have to go outside to assess something with a landscaper, electrician, etc.

  • By the back porch. To wear when watering plants, refilling my hummingbird feeder or chasing my cat Pops who has escaped!

  • By the basement entrance. To wear when I go into the basement to get a bottle of wine, check the sump pump, etc.

  • In my bedroom. To wear around the house all day — whenever I’m not using one of the aforementioned pairs :)

Something I learned growing up in California — earthquake country: ALWAYS have shoes near your bed so you can find them quickly + easily in the event of an emergency.

The quality of my house shoes varies, but I do tend to purchase less expensive options because they get so much use. The Nordstrom Rack sale section is a gold mine for this type of shoe. Here are a few options:

NOTES

I swap pairs seasonally and keep the “pending” shoes staged in my closet until the weather shifts.

For example, In January I require full-warmth Ugg slippers, whereas in July an open-toed slip on will suffice.

I wipe the soles of my in-use house shoes regularly (~3-4 times a month) with an alcohol solution to add an extra layer of cleanliness.

I make my own “everyday” cleaner which consists of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol + a few drops of Dawn soap.

In case you we’re curious, check out all my house shoes below (and yes — they are ALL looking worse for the wear…) 😆

Is this something you’d try, or have already implemented at your house?
